About Us

It all began in 1983… Furness Cars & Commercials OUR history

Furness Cars & Commercials was started in April 1983 by Bob and Margaret Grieve from Unit 1, Station Yard, Askam-In-Furness.

Originally carrying out service, repair and maintenance to all makes and models of vehicles and agricultural equipment Bob and Margaret were soon approached by leading motoring organisation along with local individuals and business with regards to providing a roadside assistance and recovery service in the local area, always keen for a challenge Bob and Margaret agreed and went on to invest in a small number of vehicles and equipment and expanded the business adding on the 24hr roadside assistance and recovery service to its ever growing service, repair and maintenance business.

As all parts of the business grew it was evident that additional premises were required, and in 1990 new premises were purchased and constructed to suit the requirement of the business and its growing customer base. The business became Limited in 1992 and further investment in equipment and staff continued throughout the next decade.

In 2003 Bob retired from the business and Margaret took a step back from the day to day operations, their son’s Kevin and Gary took over the business and further growth and expansion was created. In 2005 the business diversified by moving away from vehicle body repairs and vehicle painting to concentrate on the car and commercial vehicle service, repair and maintenance and 24hr roadside assistance and recovery. In 2010 the business expanded further by acquiring additional premises at Crooklands, Kendal near to junction 36 of the M6 motorway, this acquisition allowed the business to expand the services it provides to a larger area of South Cumbria to the ever growing list of local and national customers it serves today.

The business today stands at the forefront of the vehicle service, repair and maintenance and 24 hrs roadside assistance and recovery industries through the professional services it provides, this is achieved through the hard work, determination and skill of the businesses many dedicated staff. The business today stands much larger than ever anticipated in 1983, but it continues to pride itself on the professional services it provides to its customers and it remains standing on the family principles to which it began, to provide an honest, reliable and quality service.
